Our History:

The Caledonian brand name first gained a pre-eminent position in the industry in its native Scotland. In 1824 the first branch outside Edinburgh was formed as The Caledonian Insurance Company and was based on Dame Street for over 100 years. In 1958 ‘takeover fever' was sweeping the market in Britain and Caledonian became a member of the Guardian group of companies.

Ten years later the Guardian Group merged with the Royal Exchange Group to form The Guardian Royal Exchange Group. By the latter part of the century, Guardian had firmly positioned itself in the Irish market and continued to build its reputation and business within the Life Assurance and Investment markets throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

In April 2000 the Royal Liver Group, one of the UK's leading financial Mutual Societies, completed its purchase of Guardian Life Ireland. Following this takeover, in January 2001, Guardian Life Ireland was re-launched as Caledonian Life, building on the foundations of the Caledonian Insurance Company and Guardian Life.
